Provenance & lore

Mr. Pemberton’s story.

A dockside antiquarian sold us Mr. Pemberton with a single condition: that he not be stored below the ground floor. The reason, he said, would explain itself.

Caretakers describe faint, even footsteps near his shelf after dark — never threatening, but unmistakably present, as though he is keeping a watch he was given long ago and never relieved of.
